Account Setup
Getting started with ExpertMD takes just a few minutes. This guide walks you through account creation, role selection, and the three-step onboarding process that ensures your account is fully configured before you start working.Creating your account
ExpertMD uses Clerk for authentication, giving you a secure and flexible sign-in experience.Visit the ExpertMD website
Navigate to expertmd.io and click the Sign Up button in the top navigation bar. You can also click Get Started from any of the landing page sections.

Choose your sign-up method
You can create an account using:
- Email and password — Enter your email address and create a strong password
- Google — Sign in with your Google account for one-click setup
- Apple — Use your Apple ID if you prefer
Whichever method you choose, you will need to verify your email address before proceeding. Check your inbox for a verification code.
Role selection
After your account is created, you will be asked to select your role on the platform. This determines your dashboard layout, available features, and navigation.Doctor / Medical Expert
Choose this if you are a physician, surgeon, or other medical professional who wants to provide expert witness services. You will receive intake requests from attorneys, manage cases, create invoices, and receive payouts.
Attorney / Legal Professional
Choose this if you are an attorney or legal professional who needs to find and engage medical expert witnesses. You will submit intake requests, manage cases, review and pay invoices, and collaborate with your team.

The onboarding modal
After selecting your role, ExpertMD presents a guided onboarding modal called the How It Works flow. This modal walks you through three essential setup steps to ensure your account is ready to use.Step 1: Understand the platform
The first screen of the onboarding modal provides a brief overview of how ExpertMD works for your specific role: For doctors:- How attorneys find and contact you
- How intake requests flow into your dashboard
- How cases, invoicing, and payouts work
- How to search for and contact medical experts
- How intake requests and case management work
- How invoicing and payment processing work

Step 2: Complete your profile
The second step directs you to fill in your professional information. Depending on your role, this includes: For doctors:- Full legal name and credentials (MD, DO, PhD, etc.)
- Medical specialty and sub-specialties
- Years of experience
- States where you are licensed to practice
- Billing address for invoicing
- Phone number
- Full legal name and bar credentials
- Practice area(s)
- Law firm name and address
- States where you are licensed to practice
- Billing address
- Phone number

Step 3: Set up encryption
The third and final onboarding step asks you to create a passphrase for end-to-end encryption. This is covered in detail in the Encryption Setup guide.
After onboarding
Once you have completed all three steps, the onboarding modal closes and you are taken to your main dashboard. From here you can:Explore your dashboard

Set up your intake form
Doctors: Configure your intake form and vanity URL so attorneys can submit requests. See Intake Form Setup.Attorneys: Set up your client intake form to receive case submissions from clients. See Client Intake.
Connect Stripe (Doctors only)
If you are a doctor, set up Stripe Connect to enable invoicing and receive payouts. See Stripe Connect Setup.
Invite team members
If you work with a team, invite colleagues to collaborate on cases. See Team Members or Team Collaboration.
Signing in to an existing account
If you already have an ExpertMD account, click Sign In on the landing page and use the same method you used to create your account (email/password, Google, or Apple).Multi-factor authentication
ExpertMD supports multi-factor authentication (MFA) through Clerk. To enable MFA:- Sign in to your account
- Navigate to Settings in the sidebar
- Under the Security section, click Enable MFA
- Follow the prompts to set up an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, etc.)
While MFA is optional, we strongly recommend enabling it to protect your account, especially since ExpertMD handles sensitive legal and medical data.
Troubleshooting
I did not receive a verification email
- Check your spam or junk folder
- Ensure you entered the correct email address
- Click Resend code on the verification screen
- If the issue persists, contact support at support@expertmd.io
I cannot sign in with Google
- Make sure you are using the same Google account you used to sign up
- Clear your browser cookies and try again
- Try using an incognito/private browsing window
I selected the wrong role
- Contact support at support@expertmd.io as soon as possible. Role changes require a manual account reset.
